The machinery manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that the machine is inherently safe. The manufacturer must conduct a risk assessment, and the machine must be designed and built with the results of that assessment taken into account.

Hazards must be eliminated and risks reduced:

  • Primarily through inherently safe design measures, such as selecting appropriate structural characteristics for the machine
  • Secondly through safeguarding and other protective measures, such as guards and safety devices
  • Finally through safety markings and instructions

The manufacturer must provide operating instructions in an official language of the destination country. In Finland, machinery must be supplied with instructions in Finnish and, where required, Swedish.

The manufacturer must also compile the machine’s technical file. In addition, the manufacturer affixes the CE marking and signs the declaration of conformity, confirming that the machine meets the applicable safety requirements.

The importer or seller of the machine must provide the purchaser with instructions in Finnish and, where required, Swedish.

The employer is responsible for the safe use of the machine throughout its lifecycle. The employer must select a safe machine suitable for the work and working conditions. The machine must be kept safe throughout its service life through regular servicing and maintenance.

The employer must also conduct a risk assessment. Machinery safety must be reassessed particularly when production or working methods change. In addition to safety, the assessment should consider usability and the relationship between costs and the benefits achieved.

The employer must ensure that the manufacturer’s instructions are followed in all activities involving the machine. If the manufacturer’s instructions are unavailable or insufficient, they must be supplemented or replaced with new instructions.

The employer must train employees in the safe use of the machine. Particular attention must be paid to maintenance work and fault situations. In the event of an accident, the company may be held responsible for inadequate instructions or training.

Employees are responsible for understanding the hazards associated with the machinery they use and the machinery present in their working environment.

Coresbond can provide support and guidance on a wide range of machinery safety matters. For example:

  • We identify the requirements applicable to your machine or product
  • We manage the entire risk assessment process, including hazard identification, risk rating and defining the necessary measures. We also prepare risk assessments for production machinery and working environments
  • We compile the CE-marking documentation for your product. We also take responsibility for the conformity of every product we supply
  • We prepare operating and maintenance instructions
  • We design the required risk-reduction measures and, when necessary, manage their implementation. Machinery modernizations, additional safety devices and other protective solutions are also available from us as turnkey deliveries
  • We help manage employee safety training and produce the required training materials
